Meetings, meetings, damn those interminable meetings!

The life of a busy Acting Chairman of the BMMFC is one long round of meetings, telephone conference calls and power breakfasts! With weighty decisions to be made on a regular basis and the necessary coercing of reluctant committee members into action on various missions one is almost driven to the point of exhaustion. It’s tough at the top!

If it were not for the fact that I over-exaggerate beyond the limits of believability I am sure you would have some sympathy for me. Nevertheless, meetings we do have, and I am sure most of you will be aware of the various “discussions” regarding the most suitable evening on which to hold our monthly club meetings.

After long debates and numerous consultations with St.B’s executive we have finally agreed that in future meetings will take place on THURSDAYS, and usually it will be the first Thursday of the month. Hurrah!!!

Having said that the next meeting will be the Autumn Auction and that will take place on the second Thursday 12th November so as to avoid the clash with Bonfire night that occurred last year and caused some problems.

As you can see the doors will be open from 6.30pm so as to allow a longer period of registration and ease the congestion so we can start promptly at 8.00pm.

We are advertising the event as widely as we can given the short time we have and hope that it will be as well attended as last Autumn’s Auction.

The entry fee of £2.00 is very necessary to cover costs and includes the cost of five raffle tickets. The earlier you get there the quicker we will get to your favourite lot.

So be there or be square as they say!

Spooky!

Yes this year we are celebrating Halloween with a Night Fly-in Barbeque on Saturday 31st October 2009 starting at 6.30pm. So slap some LED’s on your wings and get down to the fixed wing field for some really fun flying.
Helicopters too! Bring your own food and we’ll burn it to a crisp on our new Barbie at absolutely no cost to yourself! Prizes for the best fancy dress and the most spectacular crash!

If you take a look at www.brchobbies.co.uk you will find all you need to light up your model like the Blackpool Illuminations and at really good prices.

400mph and it ain’t even got a motor!

Those members who were lucky enough to be at the last club meeting were treated to an excellent presentation by Andy Ellison President of the Tyldesley model Flying Club. The main topic of his talk was the setting of the new world speed record for model aircraft, believe it or believe it not it was with a glider! If you would like a full description on how that was possible, have a look at www.tmfc.org.uk/ds/darkside.html where all will be revealed.

Not content with that Andy displayed a number of specialist models including his renowned model the JART known generically as a Lead Sled and with good reason as it weighs in at around 12lbs and only spans around 40”!

Andy also showed us how to produce stunningly rigid wings using a vacuum bag system as well as some interesting paint and finishing techniques.

Thanks again Andy it was a really good night!

New Members

We wish a hearty welcome to Roger Shea, Stephen Woods, who joined us recently and I hope

we will be seeing lots of them in the future down at the field.

Happy Birthday Declan!

Yes our very own EDF jet-meister Declan Collins has reached his 18th birthday nscathed and to celebrate his mum baked him a special cake.

He really wanted a Bob the Builder or Ballerina Barbie cake but he got one covered in airplanes, how strange!

Never mind we all wish you a Happy 18th and many more to come!

One man went to mow…

And when he did the mower broke. Don’t worry though he went to get the other mower and guess what? That one broke too! Now I know how hard working our grounds-man extraordinaire, Jock Lindsay works to keep the field up-to scratch but even he can’t cut the grass with a pair of scissors so a quick executive decision was made and a brand new mower ordered.

That’s the good news; the bad news is that our capital reserve account has had a big chunk taken out of it. We will need to look hard at how that chunk can be replaced as painlessly as possible, more on this subject in due course.

My word it’s getting longer by the minute!

Stop it now! I’m talking about the fixed wing patch. After a number of requests by members with big ones (models that is) we have added a twenty foot extension to the right hand end, with the hope that this will allow a longer run off when landing left to right. Of course this also allows for a longer take off run in both directions and should allow larger models to appear at the field on a more regular basis

Pick A Box! Any Box!

The debate on the safety of the central pilot box position rumbles on, with concern from some quarters that models crossing in front of pilots could in extreme cases cause damage to life and limb should a model ground loop and hit another pilot.

As a compromise may I be bold enough to suggest the following:

Since the extension to the strip, the central box is now not as central as it was (i.e. 20ft further left of centre relative to the right hand end) and therefore when flying from LEFT to RIGHT there is plenty of runway to the right, A take off from in front of the box, as shown below in red, should not cause any difficulties. When flying from RIGHT to LEFT let’s use the right hand pilot box as usual. This means models do not have to cross in front of other pilots when taking off.

Additionally, as was evident at the Fun Day Fly-in during which we had very many more models than any normal flying day, please abide to the rule of only placing models past the white line painted on the runway (10m from the edge of the patch) therefore reducing the danger even further.

For crosswind situations either box may be used as long as ALL pilots use the same one.

As I said at the beginning this is only a suggestion but I believe a workable one. In due course we can trial this option and prove its effectiveness.

One additional benefit is that landing further into the field instead of trying to land on the first three feet will greatly reduce the number of landings that fall short of the field, and who hasn’t done that!
