Sid Matthews Resigns

I must inform all members about the resignation of Sid Matthews as chairman of our club.
He has resigned with immediate affect due to medical reasons. He is OK but needs to do less and leave things to someone may be a little younger.

I am sure the club wishes him all the best and I am also sure we will see him on the flight line in the not to distant future.

Sid will leave a giant hole in the club. He has done a hard job and made it look easy. As a respected committee member and friend all I can say is he will take some replacing. All the best mate!

In the interim period before the AGM the committee have asked Warren Sherman to become acting Chairman and I am delighted to say that after some coercion he has agreed, effective immediately.

Dave Cooper Honorary Secretary

Editor of Propwash AND Club Chairman!

Gee, I am overwhelmed by your faith in my ability not only to be able to use a spell checker but also to boss people about without actually doing any work myself, it just gets better by the day!

Naturally I have to start with an apology for the delay in sending out this edition of Propwash as due to the need to earn an honest bob or two I have had a little less free time of late.

My old mucker and co-editor Bill McElroy has been through the mill a bit, what with one health problem following another, however he is now on the mend and in his words “upright and breathing” so we should see the ‘owd codger about a bit more soon. So in for a penny, here we go with this edition of Propwash.

Club Meetings

Just to clarify, there will be No August meeting this year and so the next club meeting will take place at 7.30pm for 8.00pm on MONDAY 7th September at St Bernadettes Social Club, Manchester Road, Bury. Please make an effort as there will be several important items on the agenda.

We are all delighted to see the arrival of the new Container/Clubhouse down at the field.

It arrived several weeks ago and following an anxious few moments it has finally been plonked down in position at the end of the pits. Thanks are due to all those involved in sourcing and placing the container.

For security reasons access to the keys is being restricted but eventually most members will be let into the secret of how to unlock the damn thing, but for now

if you arrive and its closed and you don’t know the Secret then you’ll have to wait for a kind soul who does, to open it for you.

Over the next few months we hope to see the vital ingredients added, such as power and a kettle at the very least! The Jacuzzi and Sauna will arrive next week and the lap dancing shows taking place each weekend will be limited to members of the committee only!

A Cautionary “Tail”

Picture the scene, a lovely day, albeit with a 5-6mph cross wind from the West (i.e into your face when your back is to the pits).
Two models; the first is a 30” span EP fun-fly similar to the LilBanshee (sorry can’t remember the exact model); the second a Sebart Angel 30s EP.

The fun-fly is fun-flying in the middle of the patch at low level, the Angel enters stage right for a low pass and slices the starboard wing clean off the fun-fly which promptly spirals and eats grass.
The Angel survives and within micro seconds the pilot chucks the tranny into my hands having suffered ultra-rapid digestive transit!

I make a decision to approach from the right crosswind with a view to applying rudder and opposite aileron at the last moment to face into wind and land. I apply sufficient throttle to ensure airspeed and throw in the rudder, anticipating the turn and ready to level with aileron.
What happens? Nothing happens! Other than the model is flying straight at me and gathering bspeed. I duck and apply full power; thankfully she responds to aileron and goes around for another circuit. This time I try nothing fancy and bring her in straight down the strip with plenty of power and she sets down safely.

On retrieving the model we notice that the rudder pushrod has slipped its collet as the grub screw holding it had loosened hence no rudder! What is more, as the model is carried away I realise that the elevator too was flapping in the breeze having suffered the same fate!

Now of course at this point both pilots are bemoaning the mid-air but it occurred to me that the pilot of the Angel should in reality be utterly grateful to the pilot of the fun-fly.

Why? Simply because had, the mid air not occurred, the Abngel would have bit the dust due to lack of elevator and rudder. As it happens the Angel suffered no damage at all from the impact and, because it is obligatory to land after a mid air (voluntarily or not), the flight was terminated early. The moral is of course, that if you insist on using adjustable collets to secure your surfaces make damn sure you Loctite® your grub screws or suffer the consequences!!

Please note bI have not mentioned the pilots by name so as avoid Gerry any embarrassment!

Fore!!

By now you should all have received a copy of the rules and a reminder of the no-fly zones which apply to our flying field.
Please, please, please take note and abide by the restrictions imposed as they are there for a very good reason.
A recent crash involving one of our members’ models caused no end of bad feeling between the golf club and us.

Whilst I am a firm believer that there is little the golf club can do to curtail our flying from a legal point of view, it doesn’t do our cause much good to be abusive and intransigent when dealing with individual members of the golf club. ‘Nuff said!'

Calendar Photos

Last issue I appealed for some good photos for our forthcoming B.M.M.F.C. calendar and I am pleased to say it’s coming along nicely but I am short of around three or four more. I include here a few recent shots of the kind I am looking for.
I’m not just looking for flying models, anything of interestsuch as crashes or part built models may be of interest and all I ask is that they are of decent quality and you let me have a few brief details about the model.
